Enrollment is growing in D.C. public schools and students are scoring higher on standardized tests, but the city school system remains deeply segregated and achievement gaps between student groups persist, according to a report released Thursday by the think tank D.C. Policy Center.
The findings were part of a wide-ranging examination of education in the District that assessed student demographics, academic performance and the environment in the city’s public schools, both traditional and charter.
The report is intended to provide a snapshot on the state of D.C.’s schools, said Chelsea Coffin, who leads the center’s education policy research.
One of the report’s key takeaways: increasing enrollment in D.C. Public Schools could indicate growing trust in the city’s schools.
